Kraft Heinz Acquires Food AI Startup Wellio

Karft Heinz recently announced that it has acquired food tech startup wellio, which will help jumpstart the company’s digital hub

The Kraft Heinz Company (NASDAQ: KHC) has opened a new digital hub as part of the evolv group. The evolv group will create digitally powered business models and launch other entrepreneurial ideas to fuel growth for Kraft Heinz.

As part of this new group, Kraft Heinz has established and is rapidly growing tech and entrepreneurial teams in San Francisco and Chicago. In San Francisco, there will be a team of software engineers, data scientists, product managers, designers, and members of its eCommerce team.

Kraft Heinz jumpstarted its digital hub through the acquisition of wellio, an AI Food Tech company based in San Francisco.

“In wellio, we found extraordinary talent that could fuel our digital ambitions and an AI platform that can help us create food related solutions for our consumers and help us partner with our customers in unique ways,” said Nina Barton, President of Global Digital Online Growth.

Barton added, “We wanted to take a holistic look at digital disruption and growth. This is part of a larger growth approach for Kraft Heinz and is in addition to our recently announced $100 million venture fund, Evolv Ventures.”

Kraft’s evolv group helps support the similarly-named-but-separate Evolve Ventures, which is the food tech venture fund Kraft Heinz committed $100 million to just last month. Evolve Ventures is focused on investing in supply chain, logistics, direct-to-consumer projects, and e-commerce startups.

Wellio had earlier raised $3 million in venture funding. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
